The history of Valentine's Day Flower Delivery
For romantics everywhere, Valentine’s Day is the time of the year to celebrate the special person in their life. Hundreds of years of traditions and customs have made it into the holiday that we observe today, with flower sending – particularly red roses – at the heart of celebrations.
Here at Direct2florist, we’re often asked when is Valentine’s Day? The answer of course is February 14th every year. But why do we celebrate it on this date?
There are various stories, but perhaps the most popular belief is that Valentine`s Day originated during the third century in Rome, after Emperor Claudius II banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. A young priest named Valentine was furious with this injustice and defied Claudius by continuing to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Claudius eventually discovered Valentine’s actions and sentenced him to death. During his time in prison, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14th February, 270 AD, he sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine".
The date was key at the time – the Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February – officially the start of their springtime. As part of this celebration, boys drew names of girls from a box. They'd be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they'd get married. Later on, the church wanted to turn this festival into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember Valentine too.
Gradually, Valentine's name started to be used by people to express their feelings to those they loved and some 200-plus years after Valentine’s death, Pope Gelasius declared the date as a day to honour Valentine, who by that time had become a saint.
Flowers are synonymous with Valentine’s Day – with red roses the most popular Valentine’s Day flower delivery for Direct2florist’s customers. But just why do we send red roses for this romantic of days?
The story goes that the tradition of giving Valentine’s Day flowers dates to the late 17th century, during the reign of King Charles II of Sweden. During a trip to Persia, King Charles II was exposed to a new art – the language of flowers. This expressionist art focused on the ability to communicate using flowers without uttering any words at all. The Swedish monarch took the tradition back to Europe, where it spread widely, with lists of flowers and their meanings widely distributed.
The red rose, as you may have guessed, translated to deep love, and took on this meaning because of its affiliation with Aphrodite, the goddess of love. In Greek mythology, it is said that rose bushes grew from the ground through Aphrodite’s tears and the blood of her lover, Adonis. The Romans, who turned Aphrodite into their goddess Venus, kept the rose as her symbol of love and beauty.
As a result, when Valentine’s Day became the mainstream holiday we know today, the rose was an obvious choice for an extremely fitting gift – a tradition that shows no sign of slowing down today as Valentine’s Day flowers remain just as popular as ever.
How many roses should I send for Valentine’s Day?
Red roses will always be the most popular romantic gesture come Valentine's Day, but how many roses should you send? Here at Direct2florist we’ve seen customers send 100 red roses, others have opted for a delivery of 50 wonderful red roses. However, the most popular red rose gifts for Valentine’s Day are the classic 12 red roses and a single stem. Here's a quick rundown of what Direct2Florist's network of talented floristry professionals deliver for Valentine’s Day every year.
The classic 12 red roses
A firm favourite for Valentine's Day, a dozen red roses is the classic romantic gesture. When ordering, consider how long you would like the rose stems to be – longer stems make for the ultimate gift, whilst shorter stems offer better value. And, contrary to myth, longevity of the roses will be more or less even whatever stem length you go for. If ordering for delivery to an office or other workplace, opt for a hand-tied design where the roses will be delivered in a water bubble, ensuring a long life.
The stylish single red rose
Single red roses, delivered in beautiful gift-wrapping or even a gift box look a million dollars. As well as superb value for money, a single rose is an excellent choice for when the lucky recipient will be carrying the gift home on public transport, for example, or if you're looking to combine flowers with chocolates, balloons, champagne or even a cuddly toy.
Rose plants
For the ultimate lasting gift, go for a rose plant. Direct2Florist's professionals have some beautiful rose plants, complete with stylish containers and adorned with those magical Frisch touches, just crying out to be sent to that special someone.
What red roses should I buy for my Valentine?
Valentine’s Day is a day for extra special gifts. That’s why, for the celebration of love on February 14th, our florists will only use the freshest, most beautiful red roses for Valentine’s Day. They’ll choose the rubiest red, long-stemmed and large headed varieties. Premium red rose varieties used in Valentine's Day gifts include:
Ever Red
Described by some as the most perfect red rose variety, Ever Red Roses are an ideal choice for the day of love. Thanks to a lovely symmetry, a velvety deep red centre and a lovely long life, these roses are simply perfect for Valentine’s bouquets.
Freedom
One of the most popular red rose varieties for a long time now, Freedom is large in size, velvety in texture and, as a bonus, has lovely green foliage with a more matte finish than you would perhaps expect. All-in-all, this makes it a luxurious rose perfect for designing Valentine’s Day bouquets with the wow factor.
Red Naomi
Another velvety red rose, Naomi has large petals that look a million dollars. An added bonus is a subtle scent that just adds to the feeling of luxury, making it a florist favourite when it comes to Valentine’s Day flower arrangements.
Grand Prix
Premium Grand Prix roses are a longstanding first choice for many red rose buyers thanks to their long stems, large heads, an abundance of petals and the richest shade of sumptuous ruby red.
Balthazar
The Balthazar Rose features velvety petals are as rich, dark and extremely glamorous! So perfect for Valentine’s Day.
It’s all about the message card
When ordering a Valentine’s Day rose delivery, the message card – sent with every bouquet of Valentine’s Day flowers delivered by our network of local florists – is just as important as the flowers.
We appreciate that getting the message right can be a tricky, so if you're not sure what to write in a Valentine's Day card, start by thinking back on why this individual is important to you. What about them makes your heart go pitter-patter? What do you most appreciate about them? When in doubt, you can't go wrong by sharing a beloved memory, funny story or inside joke that brings you two together. The best card messages for Valentine’s Day are often the most personal ones, so remember, by ordering online you won’t have to face the embarrassment of sharing your message face-to-face with the florist, meaning you can be as risqué as you like!
Classic Valentines card messages include:
- Like you and me, some things are just meant to be.
- So happy we both swiped right.
- I’m yours. Sorry, no refunds or exchanges.
- I love that you're my emergency contact.
Another point to consider in your Valentine’s Day message is whether you want to remain anonymous. That is, of course, a very personal choice, but some Direct2florist customers choose to remain anonymous but use a really personal message that leaves no doubt about the flower sender. Others just go for a simple ‘I Love You’ but add their name!

Pink roses, for example, look brilliant and are cheaper in some cases, meaning you could order a bigger bouquet. What extra gifts can I add to my order?
Chocolates are a tasty Valentine’s Day add-on, but perhaps you could try a balloon or even a romantic cuddly toy. Another great option and a long-term winner is opting for a flower design that comes complete with a vase. When placing your order, look out for the add-on gift options offered by your florist.

In short, yes! Roses are for everybody at Valentine’s Day – a hand-delivered gift of flowers makes anybody’s day special, especially when done well through a local florist.
What is Galentine’s Day?
While Valentine’s Day on February 14th is all about celebrating romance, February 13th or Galentine's Day as it has been titled, celebrates platonic friendships, usually among women. At Direct2florist we’ve seen a rapidly rising interest in this day and, over the past years, more and more women are sending roses – often pink – to their best friends to mark the occasion.
How much does it cost to send a dozen red roses?
The cost of sending roses for Valentine’s Day can vary enormously. From year-to-year prices of roses can fluctuate according to the costs related to production, including fluctuating weather.
