Top tips for florists to improve their flower photography

2018/2019 Awards

1.Take them square.

This will save you a lot of time cropping your images and trying to make them fit to size when you come to turning them into products. Almost all devices, regardless of whether you’re using a Phone or Digital Camera, will allow you to do this. Look for the 1:1 ratio setting. Check the settings tab in App or a quick ‘Google’ should help you find out how to do this on your device.

2. Choose a flattering angle to take your shot.

As a creative expert you’ll be well acquainted with the importance of placement. There’s no one correct answer, but, taking your product photo at just above eye-level often works wonders. Try turning your product a few degrees left or right to find the most flattering angle to show off your product.

3. Stay away from a white backdrop.

Unless you’re a seasoned pro and planning to go through an image editing stage - taking photos with a white background will often leave you with dull, subdued looking images. Not a good look, as we’re sure you’ll agree.

4. Make the best use of your shop's interior or exterior to find interesting backgrounds.

It may be wall colours, table tops, floorings, flower displays, brickwork or something else. Whilst its a good idea to avoid lots of clutter, using your shops environment is an excellent way to achieve a personalised ‘local’ florist look to your flower photography.

5. Find multiple placement points around your shop.

It may be wall colours, table tops, floorings, flower displays, brickwork or something else. Whilst its a good idea to avoid lots of clutter, using your shops environment is an excellent way to achieve a personalised ‘local’ florist look to your flower photography.

6. Make sure your images aren’t blurred.

It’s a good idea to zoom into your image to check. A table-top phone tripod could help, but most newer devices have excellent image stabilisation as a standard feature.

With all the effort that goes into creating the flower gifts you send out, it’s definitely worth a couple of minutes extra effort into to capturing your work:

1. It’s what your sending customer sees and takes into consideration when leaving your business a review.

2. It’s an excellent way to develop your inventory. Whilst you may sell the same product often, there will be many instances the photos you take can be turned into new products.

3. Every delivery is an opportunity to promote your business. The photos you capture can then be used to promote your business on social media platforms like Facebook & Instagram.

We hope you find some of these tips useful and look forward to seeing lots more of your fabulous flower deliveries.
