Bunches not brunches this Galentine’s Day

As we head closer to the middle of February, thoughts will typically turn to all of the cards, flowers (think red roses!), chocolates and romance of Valentine’s Day. However, there’s a new kid on the block vying for attention – Galentine's Day!

This new ‘holiday’ – although we prefer to call it a celebration – is quickly becoming a popular event in the calendar. And it’s easy to see why. This female-friendly holiday, which falls every year on February 13th, is the ideal way to celebrate the love you have for your lady friends, whether they're single or not.

The concept for Galentine’s Day dates back to 2010 and an unlikely source; US sitcom “Parks and Recreation”. The show’s protagonist Leslie Knope, played by former Saturday Night Live star Amy Poehler, celebrated her friends with a brunch in an episode called “Galentine’s Day”. In the episode, Leslie explains: “Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.”

Galentine's Day - 13th Feb

Galentine’s Day 2021 will no doubt take on extra special meaning, given the continuing restrictions placed on mixing with friends thanks to COVID-19. Whether you're gleefully single, happily coupled or somewhere in between, taking a day to recognise the importance of friendship can only help strengthen some of the most important relationships in our lives.

As a result, Direct2florist is expecting to see a marked increase in Galentine’s Day flower deliveries this year – with florists across the country reporting early orders ahead of the big day. While gals will no doubt connect over Zoom, WhatsApp or whatever, flowers will be a popular choice when it comes to celebrating friendships and personal messages of love. You could say this year will be all about bunches, not brunches!

When it comes to having Galentine’s flowers delivered, Direct2florist is expecting to see a wider, more creative selection than you would normally see on Valentine’s Day. Whereas 14th February will be all about red roses, it’s likely that gals will be sending bold and bright mixes of flowers, often choosing their best friend’s favourite blooms or flowers to match their homes. Think gerberas, tulips or roses in a variety of hues. Often delivered with flowers for that extra special Galentine’s Day gift.

Finally, we also expect plants to be popular gifts. Orchids topping the list for a little bit of exotic elegance this Galentine’s Day – Saturday 13th February 2021.
